What to expect
What the appointment is like
Please come with a clean face. Your injector will watch you talk and smile, check your profile, and then decide on the product, needle or cannula, and syringe count. Numbing cream goes on for 15 to 20 minutes, and the gels contain lidocaine, so the sting fades after the first pass. In the lips, it feels like pressure and a dull ache. You’ll see the new shape before you leave.
Consult
We’ll talk through your goals, watch you smile, and take a profile photo. Together we’ll decide on the product and syringe count and write it down. If filler isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you at this stage.
Numbing
Topical cream for 15 to 20 minutes, plus lidocaine inside the gel.
Treatment
Needle or cannula, with 10 to 25 minutes of injecting depending on the area. Swelling starts within minutes, which is normal.

You’ll see the shape right on the table, but your real result is what’s left at two weeks, once the swelling has gone. We’ll check it together at two to four weeks and refine then if needed. Lips typically hold 6 to 12 months. Chin, jaw, and cheeks typically hold 12 to 18 months, sometimes longer. Individual results vary. Is it right for me?
Who it’s for, and who it isn’t
Filler suits adults 22 and older who have a specific goal and don’t have significant skin laxity. Many people start with lips or chin, and cheeks often come later.
A good fit for
- Volume loss in the cheeks, temples, chin, or jawline
- Folds that sit there even at rest
- Thin or uneven lips
- Visible tendons on the backs of the hands
Not recommended
- Loose skin that has slid rather than deflated (threads or Morpheus8)
- During pregnancy or breastfeeding, absolutely contraindicated
- A history of anaphylaxis, lidocaine allergy, or prior HA reaction
- An infection or cold sore near the site
Common risks are bruising, swelling, tenderness, and lumps. The rare but serious one is vascular occlusion. We use HA in higher-risk areas because it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, and keep Radiesse to the jawline and hands.

What it treats
Filler restores volume where there isn’t enough. Here are the areas we treat most often.
Lip filler can add definition, sharpen the border, balance the top lip with the bottom, or hydrate lips that crease when you talk. Softer HA gels approved for the lips: Juvederm Ultra XC and Volbella XC, Restylane Kysse and Silk, RHA 3, and Versa Lips+. A half syringe covers definition, and a full syringe adds volume. If you’d like more upper lip to show when you smile without added volume, a lip flip with Botox may be the better answer.
These areas are about profile balance: a chin that sits behind the lower lip in profile, or a jawline that lacks definition. Firmer HA gels are approved for the chin (Juvederm Voluma XC, Restylane Lyft and Defyne). Juvederm Volux XC and Radiesse (+) are approved for jawline definition. One syringe in the chin can make a noticeable difference to your profile, while a jawline takes more.
This is for early volume loss in the cheeks and midface. Voluma XC and Restylane Lyft or Contour are the structural products here. Allergan says Voluma XC results in the cheeks last up to 2 years with optimal treatment. Done well, it looks rested. Overdone, it can look puffy, so we start conservatively.
Filler softens a fold that has become a static crease. It won’t erase it or fix the sagging that caused it. If the cheek above the fold has dropped, we’ll treat the cheek first or point you toward PDO threads.
Under-eye hollows are on label with exactly three products: Juvederm Volbella XC, Restylane Eyelight, and RHA Redensity Eye, per their FDA approvals. For a first-time under-eye client, we’ll usually suggest PRF under the eyes first. Radiesse is approved for back-of-hand volume.
How it works
Hyaluronic acid filler is a crosslinked sugar gel that binds water and physically holds space under the skin, then breaks down over months, per the FDA. Every HA gel we use can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Radiesse is different: calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in a carrier gel that add volume on the day, then act as a scaffold for your own collagen as the gel is absorbed, per Merz. Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase, which is why we use it in the jawline and never in the lips.
Fillers are FDA-approved Class III devices for adults 22 and older, for specific areas. The FDA recommends against filler in the glabella, nose, forehead, neck, or around the eyes, and against any body use. We use each product only in the areas it’s approved for.

Approved areas per each product’s FDA PMA record (for example Juvederm’s), durations per each maker’s site. How long yours lasts depends on area, dose, and movement. Lips tend to fade fastest.

Downtime and aftercare
Day 0: expect swelling, tenderness, and maybe a bruise. Lips swell the most. Days 1 to 3: swelling peaks, usually on day two, and any bruises show. Days 4 to 14: firmness and small lumps gradually soften. Allergan says the common effects (redness, swelling, pain, firmness, lumps, bruising) mostly resolve within 30 days, per Juvederm’s safety information.
You’ll leave with an ice pack and no dressing. Lip swelling peaks over the first 24 to 48 hours and takes about a week to settle, so plan important meetings or events for day three or later. Hold off on makeup over needle sites for 12 to 24 hours, and skip hot yoga, saunas, alcohol, and hard workouts for 24 to 48 hours. Try not to press on the area or sleep face-down the first two nights. It’s also best to avoid dental work and facials for two weeks. If your prescriber agrees, please skip aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and alcohol for a few days before. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner for this.

No, it’s temporary. Hyaluronic acid lip filler is broken down by the body over roughly 6 to 12 months, and it can be dissolved earlier with hyaluronidase. Manufacturers state up to a year for their lip products. Lips move constantly, so they metabolize filler faster than the chin or cheeks.
Typically 6 to 18 months depending on product and area. Lip products are stated at up to 1 year by their makers. Juvederm Voluma XC in the cheeks and Radiesse are each stated at up to 2 years. Your dose, metabolism, and movement can shorten or extend that.
It adds structure along the jaw so it reads as a line instead of a curve into the neck. Juvederm Volux XC and Radiesse (+) are FDA-approved for jawline definition. It works for a soft jaw with good skin. It won’t lift jowls, tighten a loose neck, or remove fat under the chin, and we can recommend other options for those.
Yes, and usually with just one syringe. A chin that sits behind the lower lip in profile is brought forward with a firm HA gel like Voluma XC or Restylane Defyne, both approved for the chin. It can also balance a nose that only looks large because the chin is small. Swelling settles in about two weeks.
It can. Migration shows as a shelf or shadow above the lip border, and it usually comes from too much product, product placed too shallow, or top-ups stacked before the old gel has faded. It can be corrected: hyaluronidase dissolves migrated HA, and we can redo the lip later with less.
Hyaluronic acid filler, yes. Hyaluronidase breaks it down within a day or two, and it’s also the emergency treatment for a blocked blood vessel. Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase. That’s why we use Radiesse only in structural areas like the jawline and never in the lips or near the eyes.
Aim for four to six weeks. Swelling is gone by day 14, any bruise is long gone, and there’s time for a small refinement at the two-week check. We don’t recommend a first-ever lip filler the week of the wedding.
Yes, you can. A lip flip and lip filler are often done in one visit, and forehead Botox alongside chin or cheek filler is routine. Botox takes 3 to 7 days to show and filler shows the same day, so your two-week check covers both.
