Botox for men in Lincoln Park: the first year, visit by visit

For men starting Botox, the first year usually involves three visits: a mapped first appointment, a day-14 check, and a repeat at month three or four. Men typically need more units than women for the same area because the muscle is heavier, and the goal is softened movement, not a frozen look. Here’s what each stage involves.

Visit one: mapping your face

You’ll sit upright while your injector asks you to frown, raise your brows, and squint, then marks where the muscles pull hardest. For many men, that’s two areas: the 11s between the brows and the horizontal forehead lines. Crow’s feet can be treated at the same visit or added later.

Your dose is set to the muscle in front of the injector, not to a chart. The labeled glabellar dose for Botox Cosmetic is 20 units, per its prescribing information, and a heavier male corrugator often needs more. The forehead is the area we deliberately go lighter on. A man’s brows sit lower than a woman’s, and too much in the frontalis drops them further, which can read as tired. So your forehead gets a lighter, higher pattern, and the 11s take the real dose.

The injections are a few quick pinches with a fine needle, and small bumps at the injection sites settle within 15 to 30 minutes. Botox at Skinovatio Lincoln Park is priced by the plan, so you’ll know the total before anything is drawn up, and your plan is written down for visit two. There’s no dressing, and there’s usually nothing to see by the afternoon.

Days 3 to 7: it starts working

Onset is “within 3 to 7 days,” per the American Academy of Dermatology. One randomized trial found onset slower in men than women across all three products compared, per Rappl and colleagues, so if not much has changed on day three, that’s expected. The 11s usually go quiet first, and the forehead follows.

For the 24 hours after visit one, avoid rubbing, face-down massage, and tight hats over the forehead. The AAD says to wait two hours before strenuous exercise, and we’d suggest skipping hard workouts that day. If you have a race or other athletic event coming up, book Botox a few days beforehand rather than the day before.

Day 14: your check-in

Full effect is at day 14, which is the right time to check whether a touch-up would help. Many men skip this visit, but it’s worth keeping. If one brow sits higher than the other, or a line persists at the tail of the 11s, a few units can fix it now.

If you have headshots or an event coming up, plan around day 14, when the effect is full and even and your expressions still look like your own.

Month 3 to 4: it fades, and it’s time for visit two

Botox holds “about 3 to 4 months, and sometimes longer,” per the AAD. In the trials, 48 percent of patients were still responders at day 90 and 25 percent at day 120. Movement comes back gradually, so there’s no sudden change. The 11s start to pull again before the lines etch, and that’s the right window for visit two.

Visit two is quicker, because it starts from your record. Your injector sees what held and what faded early, and adjusts from there. A corrugator that came back at week ten gets a few more units. A forehead that felt too still gets fewer. Dosing more often than every 3 months hasn’t been clinically evaluated for Botox Cosmetic, per the label, so the earliest sensible repeat is the three-month mark.

If a three- to four-month cycle is more upkeep than you’d like, Daxxify is worth discussing. It held a median of 24 weeks in its trials, per Bertucci and colleagues. As a median, that means half of patients got about six months or more, and the other half got less. The Xeomin vs Botox post covers the other product differences, which in practice tend to be small.

Month 7 to 8: visit three, and the plan is stable

By the third visit, your dose is dialed in. Many men keep the same pattern from here, with small adjustments along the way, such as a few more units at the crow’s feet after a summer of sun exposure or a few fewer in the forehead if it felt too still. The visit takes 10 to 20 minutes.

This is also when many men consider adding a second treatment. A common men’s path combines PRP for hair, Botox, and microneedling with PRP for texture, in whatever order fits your goals. PRP for hair is a longer visit: about an hour, with a blood draw at the start.

Month 12: finding your rhythm

Three visits a year is the common maintenance for Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Jeuveau. Two a year is possible with Daxxify for the half of people it lasts longer in. The Botox cost post explains why we quote by the plan instead of by the unit. Individual results vary.

Planning your visit

The appointment takes 10 to 20 minutes. We’re open 10 to 6 weekdays and 9 to 3 Saturday, on Lincoln Avenue just north of Wrightwood. Take the Brown Line to Diversey, or the 11 Lincoln bus. Midday slots fill quickly, so it’s worth booking ahead. Our Location page covers getting to Lincoln Avenue, and the laser hair removal for men post covers another treatment many men start in the fall.

Your questions, answered

Do men need more Botox than women?

Usually, yes, for the same area. The muscles that make the 11s and the forehead lines are heavier in most men, so the same softening takes more units. The product itself is the same. The labeled glabellar dose for Botox Cosmetic is 20 units, and a heavy male corrugator often needs more. We set the exact number by watching your muscle move at the consult, not by sex alone, which is why we price by the plan.

Will Botox make a man's forehead look shiny or feminine?

Not when it’s dosed for a man’s brow. The feminine or surprised look comes from treating the forehead heavily and the 11s lightly, which arches the brows. When we map a man’s face, we do the opposite: real dose in the 11s, a lighter pattern high on the forehead to keep the brows where they sit. The “shiny” look is a smooth forehead under bright light with no lines to break it up, and a lighter forehead dose leaves some movement to prevent that. You can always ask for a softer result rather than a frozen one.

Can I get Botox and PRP for hair at the same visit?

Often, yes. Mention it when you book. The PRP visit is about an hour, with a blood draw, a spin, and injections into the scalp. Botox is 10 to 20 minutes of forehead and 11s. In the same appointment, we start with the scalp. Both are needle-based, so it’s best to skip aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and alcohol for a few days before, if your doctor agrees.

How long before it shows in a headshot?

Fourteen days. Onset is within 3 to 7 days and often a day or two slower in men, but the full, even effect that photographs well is at day 14. We’d suggest booking Botox at least two weeks before the headshot or event, so the day-14 check can correct anything uneven beforehand. Any pinpoint bruise from the injection should be gone by then too.
