Laser hair removal for men in Lincoln Park: back, chest, neck, and the honest session count
For a back or chest, plan on six sessions, sometimes eight, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, on the Candela GentleMax Pro. Starting in October keeps the course in the months when skin is least likely to be tanned. Shave the night before, and avoid waxing. The checklist below covers the rest of the preparation.
Your checklist, in order
Review this before your first session, since missing any of these can mean rescheduling. The laser hair removal page covers the wavelengths and the cost drivers.
Before your first laser session
- Shave the area within 24 hours, ideally the night before
- Avoid waxing, tweezing, or threading for 4 to 6 weeks
- Avoid tanning, tanning beds, and self-tanner for 2 to 4 weeks
- Let us know about photosensitizing medications, and we'll mask tattoos and dark moles
- Skip hard workouts, hot showers, and sauna for 24 hours after
- Plan the course to finish before summer sun exposure
- Avoid treating areas that chafe in the 10 days before a race
Here’s why each step matters.
Shave rather than wax. The laser pulse is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and follicle, per the Candela patient page. Waxing pulls that target out, while shaving leaves it in the follicle, where the laser needs it, with no stubble above the surface to burn.
Avoid tanning, including self-tanner. Tanned skin has more surface melanin competing for the pulse, which raises burn risk, so we’ll wait until it fades. Aim for two to four weeks tan-free before every session, and two weeks of sunscreen after. That’s easier to manage in fall and winter, when sun exposure is lower, which is why we recommend an October start.
Tell us about any medications you take. Photosensitizing medications, a keloid history, an active cold sore or infection, and open wounds all change the plan. Isotretinoin used to mean an automatic six-month wait. The ASDS consensus found no reason to delay hair removal lasers for it, so your provider will decide case by case.
The 24 hours after. It’s normal for the area to be red and warm around each follicle for 1 to 3 days, per the American Academy of Dermatology. Heat and sweat can make that worse, so schedule workouts for the day before a session rather than right after.
How many sessions to expect, by area
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only disables a follicle that’s growing a hair on the day, so each session catches a fraction. The AAD gives 2 to 6 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart. Patients on RealSelf report 6 to 8 treatments every 4 to 8 weeks. We plan on six and will tell you at the consult which areas tend to need more.
- Back and shoulders: six sessions, 6 to 8 weeks apart. Dense, coarse hair tends to respond well here because the contrast is high. A full back takes 45 minutes to an hour in the chair.
- Chest and stomach: six sessions, 6 to 8 weeks apart. This area is a bit more sensitive than the back because the skin is thinner over the sternum.
- Neck and beard line: six to eight sessions, about 4 weeks apart, because facial hair cycles fastest. This is also where razor bumps are common, and the 1064 nm wavelength is cleared for pseudofolliculitis barbae, per the FDA clearance.
- Underarms: six sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart, about 10 minutes each.
After session one, you can expect a 10 to 25 percent reduction, per the AAD. Shedding runs 1 to 3 weeks after each visit, and the hairs can look like they’re growing right before they fall out. That’s expected. By session three, the thinning is usually clear. After the course, regrowth is finer and sparser.
Which wavelength, and why it matters for your skin
The GentleMax Pro carries a 755 nm alexandrite and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG in one machine, with a cryogen spray before each pulse. It’s cleared for Fitzpatrick I to VI. The 755 nm is for lighter skin and the 1064 nm for darker skin, because the Nd:YAG is absorbed less by the skin’s own pigment, per Gan and Graber’s review. Wherever you go, ask which wavelength will be used on your skin. A clinic should be able to name it.
This isn’t IPL. Intense pulsed light is a broad-spectrum flash, the long-term reduction evidence sits with lasers, and IPL isn’t the safe choice for hair on darker skin. Our IPL photofacial treats sun spots and redness, and we don’t use it for hair.
Your calendar: an October start for results by summer
An October start with 6 to 8 week spacing lands session six in late April or May, before summer. A January start runs the course into the sunnier months, when a tan can delay sessions, and it may finish after Labor Day. We’ll plan the schedule around whenever you start.
If you have a race coming up, we’ll avoid treating the legs, chest, or anywhere a strap rubs in the 10 days before, since chafing irritates freshly treated skin.
A back session takes 45 minutes to an hour, no dressing is needed, and any redness is covered by a shirt.
Where this fits in our men’s menu
At Skinovatio Lincoln Park, laser hair removal can be paired with PRP hair restoration in the same season, or with Botox for the forehead and 11s, a visit of about 20 minutes.
You’ll find us on Lincoln Avenue just north of Wrightwood. Our Location page covers getting to Lincoln Avenue by train, bus, and meter.

Your questions, answered
Does laser hair removal work on a hairy back in one course?
Mostly, though not entirely. A course of six sessions, sometimes eight, 6 to 8 weeks apart, takes a dense back down to sparse, finer regrowth. The American Academy of Dermatology puts the reduction after one session at 10 to 25 percent, and the full course gets most of the rest. A maintenance session once or twice a year helps keep it there. No course takes hair to zero, and the FDA defines “permanent” as long-term reduction.
Can I get my beard line lasered?
Yes. The neck and the cheek line above the beard are common areas for men, and the 1064 nm Nd:YAG on the Candela GentleMax Pro is FDA-cleared for razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) as well as hair reduction. We’ll map the line you want to keep with your beard grown in, then shave the treatment side. Facial hair cycles fast, so the neck runs six to eight sessions about 4 weeks apart. Decide on the line before session one, because reduction is long-term, and we can help you choose it.
Does it hurt more on the chest than the back?
Usually, yes. The skin over the sternum is thinner and the nerves are closer, so the chest and stomach feel sharper than the shoulders and upper back. Each pulse feels like an elastic band snapped against the skin, preceded by a cold cryogen spray that takes most of the sting out. No numbing cream is needed for either area. A full back takes 45 minutes to an hour, and a chest takes less.
Can I lift weights the same day as laser hair removal?
It’s best to wait. Avoid hard workouts, hot showers, and sauna for 24 hours after a session, because heat and sweat on freshly treated follicles raise the redness and the chance of irritation. The area is red and warm for 1 to 3 days, which is normal. Lift the day before, have your session, take a rest day, and then return to training.
